Valentines Day
… A Little History
Valentines Day as you know it probably originated from the ancient belief that birds
(Particularly lovebirds) begin to mate on February 14.
The 14th was also a designated feast day, until about 1969 (When it was
dropped from the Roman Catholic calendar), to honor two Christian saints, one of the saints was named Saint Valentine. The
two saints where honored because they were martyred by the Roman Emperor Claudius II Gothicus. The reason Saint Valentine
was beheaded, was because he would marry young couples even though Claudius forbade it. Apparently Claudious thought young
single soldiers, where better than married soldiers.
Through the centuries it all got merged together, and the modern
St. Valentines Day, is dedicated to lovers. It has become a time to exchange sentimental greeting cards and words of never-ending
adoration.
